Services
Copyediting is the craft of editing for issues like grammar, punctuation, consistency, word choice, basic organization, and adherence to a particular style guide. It requires thoroughness and expertise, things that every piece of writing (no matter how well composed) can benefit from. Good writing becomes great writing when author and editor work together to reach readers.
Paper Weight Editing, LLC offers three levels of copyediting:
- Light copyediting. This is the most basic form of copyediting. If your writing needs light copyediting, I will correct irrefutable errors in grammar, stylistic consistency, mechanics, and spelling. I will point out (query) any wordiness, redundancies, ambiguities, and statements that seem factually incorrect. I may occasionally provide suggestions on how to fix these problems, but I will leave the revising up to you. If you want copyediting that tackles only the prickly mechanical details and you prefer to do all the revising yourself, this is the best choice.
- Medium copyediting. For a medium copyedit, I not only correct irrefutable grammatical and stylistic errors, but also revise words, phrases, and sentences that are confusing, verbose, choppy, and inconsistent or inappropriate in tone and diction. I will query larger sections of the text that have problems with logic, organization, accuracy, and cohesion. I will also suggest ways to revise. If you enjoy revising but appreciate guidance and a little extra editorial help, medium copyediting will be a good fit for you.
- Heavy copyediting. Heavy copyediting provides the deepest editorial reach. In addition to correcting the specifics listed under medium copyediting, I will rewrite and reorganize portions of the text that are wordy, disorganized, unclear, or illogical. I will retain your authorial voice and meaning, and will query when I have questions that only you as the author will be able to answer. Heavy copyediting gives me more freedom to exercise my own editorial judgment; however, rest assured that I will respect your authorship and collaborate with you during this process.
